Calligraphy workshop

On Thursday 5th December, a number of students from Years 7 to 11 were involved in an Arabic Calligraphy workshop led by Rosalind Wyatt, a local artist, and Joumana Medlej, an Arabic Calligrapher.

Students read and discussed a range of poetic or inspirational texts in either Arabic or English. They then had the opportunity to experiment using a range of calligraphic techniques to represent the texts. Whilst the students were engaged in this activity, there was a lovely atmosphere of peace and tranquillity in the room and a number of the students commented afterwards on how the workshop had made them feel calm and content. One Year 7 student added that it had made him feel proud.

Rosalind is going to copy some of the calligraphy produced by the students in some textile pieces she is creating that will be displayed in the Sharjah Contemporary Museum in the United Arab Emirates.

The work produced by the students was individual and beautiful and the artists commented on the participants' excellent engagement and perfect behaviour.
