Chiswick has a thriving and very busy music department. We currently have over 150 children either on instrumental lessons, in a weekly club, or have performed at a Chiswick School Concert.

In this section you can find all the information relating to music groups that we offer, instrumental lessons, scholarship and details of how to book our musicians for external events.

Music Groups

At Chiswick we have a whole array of exciting music groups for your child to get involved in.

Chiswick Voices is our top level senior choir, open to singers in year 9 and above. They have performed at numerous venues both in and out of school and have sung a variety of classical, liturgical, and contemporary music, everything from Faure's Libera Me Domine to Get Around by The Beach Boys. Chiswick Voices currently rehearses on Tuesday Form Times and Thursday First Break

Chiswick Steel Band is our top level instrumental group for those in years 7-9. No experience is needed whatsoever, only commitment to learn something new. They rehearse Mondays from 3:10 - 4:10 and have recently learnt songs from Ed Sheeran, Imagine Dragons and Justin Timberlake. The Steel Band is in much demand, having performed at Heathrow Terminal 5, Chiswick High Road, Brentford Stadium as well as many more Schools and Pubs.

Chiswick Orchestra is our School Orchestra, who perform once/twice a term in our school concerts. We welcome everybody regardless of prior ability and rehearse Thursdays from 3:10-4:10 in A18. Recent performances have included Bach's Toccata and Fugue in D minor, and Grieg's In the Hall of the Mountain King.

Percussion Group rehearses Mondays at First Break in A21 and is available to all pupils in all years. It's very noisy and tons of fun.

Music Theory Club meets every Friday first break in A21. Those who come get their own Music Theory Workbook and can be entered in for the ABRSM music theory exams.

Performing Arts Choir rehearses on various days after school for fun-filled singing. No experience required. For more info, please ask Mr. Robinson

Bands

Chiswick is very proud to have a strong Band Programme for our best musicians. We currently have 7 bands who rehearse weekly and perform in concerts and local community areas.

Since the Bands work so intensively, they are normally selected in year 7 or 8 and nurtured so that they can grow all the way until year 13. They always have a teacher assigned to them to coach, rehearse and mentor them as they grow over time.

Our current bands are:

  • Xing and the Backups (Year 13)
  • 5 Brunettes and a Ginger (Year 11)
  • The Q (Year 9)
  • Blue Monday (Year 9)
  • AMMO (Year 8)
  • Kaos (Year 8)
  • Dark Riders (Year 7)

How does my child join a band?

The best thing to do is simply to speak to Mr. Moxon (zmo@chiswickschool.org).

Bands need to be carefully selected, if there are too many people or there is an imbalance somewhere, the band will quickly disintegrate.

However, Mr. Moxon is always keen to start up new bands, and once your interest has been registered, he will happily take note of it for when the next band becomes available.

Individual lessons and Scholarships

We offer individual lessons in all standard string, woodwind, brass, keyboard and percussion instruments, as well as singing.

All instrumental lessons are provided by Hounslow Music Service at the following rates:

10 x 20 minute lessons - £130 per term

10 x 30 minute lessons - £190 per term

For GCSE and A level Music students, the rate is £79 for 10 x 30 minute lessons per term.

All lessons are weekly and normally happen during the school day. While the lesson day tends to remain the same each week, the timing varies weekly so that a pupil does not miss the same academic lesson two weeks in a row.

Scholarships

We are very pleased to offer Music Scholarships for talented pupils in Year 6 for entry into year 7.

Music scholars receive financial support towards their instrumental lessons, and also receive specialist training to take their music skills far beyond their age group.

We are now welcoming applications for Music Scholarships for aspiring musicians who are joining Chiswick in September 2023.

Simply fill in the form HERE and we'll get in contact.
