- Visit from Local MP Inspires Thought-Pro...
On 12th December, our Citizenship GCSE and A-Level Politics students had the valuable opportunity to meet Andy Slaughter, the MP for Hammersmith and Chiswick. His visit offered pupils a rare chance to engage directly with a serving Member of Parliament and explore the realities of political life beyond the classroom.
Students took full advantage of the long question-and-answer session, posing a wide range of thoughtful and challenging questions. Topics included the ongoing closure of Hammersmith Bridge, the long-term implications of Brexit, and how an MP balances personal beliefs with the views of their constituents when casting a vote in Parliament. Pupils also raised concerns about NHS funding, as well as the merits of proportional representation compared with the current first-past-the-post voting system.
Mr Slaughter responded openly and in detail, providing insight into both local issues and national debates. His visit not only deepened students’ understanding of democratic processes, but also encouraged them to think critically about representation, accountability, and the complexities of decision-making in public office.
We are grateful to Mr Slaughter for giving his time so generously and for helping to bring political education to life for our students.
