Our Year 9 class enjoyed an inspiring and eye-opening Chiswick History Walk with Mr Williams and Ms Irvine, exploring one of the most significant chapters of our local past. The walk brought the events of the Second World War vividly to life as students learned about the Blitz and, in particular, the first V2 rocket to hit Britain —which fell right here in Chiswick.
As we walked through the quiet residential streets, Mr. Williams shared remarkable true stories of bravery and heroism from ordinary people who lived through extraordinary times. Students were captivated by the accounts of courage shown by local residents, emergency workers, and service personnel during moments of intense danger.
One of the most powerful moments of the day was visiting the grave of a Victoria Cross recipient, a humbling reminder of the sacrifices made by those who served. Standing there, students reflected on the symbolism of the medal—the highest award for gallantry—and the legacy of those who earned it.
The group also listened to a moving first-hand account from former Chiswick School student Tony Simpson, who was riding his bike down Staveley Road when the V2 rocket exploded. Hearing his recollection helped students appreciate both the suddenness of the attack and its impact on the community.
The walk not only deepened students’ understanding of the Second World War but also helped them connect with the history woven into the very streets they pass every day. It was a memorable experience that brought learning far beyond the classroom—one that students will carry with them as they continue their studies.
