A Powerful Production at Our School

I Love You, Mum – I Promise I Won’t Die

On February 24th, students in Years 9 and 10 were privileged to experience a moving and impactful performance by the Wizard Theatre, held in our school hall. The production was based on the life of Dan, a young man whose story continues to inspire others.

In May 2014, just months after Dan’s untimely passing, the DSM Foundation commissioned award-winning playwright Mark Wheeller to create a verbatim play that would share Dan's story. The aim was clear: to help young people learn the lessons Dan, unfortunately, could no longer teach himself, encouraging them to make choices that would keep them safe. The title of the play, I Love You, Mum – I Promise I Won’t Die, comes from the last words Dan said to his mother, Fiona, before leaving for what tragically turned out to be the final time.

Dan had a deep love for drama, and his teacher, Izzy Forrester (a founding Trustee of the DSM Foundation), suggested Mark Wheeller as the perfect person to tell Dan’s story. Izzy had taught Mark’s plays for years and had seen first-hand the powerful impact they had on young audiences. The resulting play beautifully captures both the joyful life and heart-breaking loss of Dan, leaving a lasting impression on all who see it.

The performance was a powerful reminder of the impact of choices and the importance of staying safe with regards to illegal drugs . We are grateful for the opportunity to share this incredible production with our students, and we hope it continues to inspire reflection and change.
