Year 12 Geography Trip to Slapton Ley

Our Year 12 geographers recently returned from an inspiring five-day residential at the Field Studies Council's Slapton Ley Centre in Devon, where they combined classroom learning with hands-on fieldwork in preparation for their A Level Geography Non- Examined Assessment (NEA).

Throughout the stay, students investigated a range of geographical environments and contemporary issues. They explored the hydrological processes within the Slapton Ley catchment, examined coastal systems and management along the dramatic Start Bay coastline and visited Plymouth to evaluate the successes and challenges of urban regeneration. A day in the market town of Totnes encouraged students to consider themes of sustainability, resilience, globalisation and changing places.

Alongside their fieldwork, students developed key research skills through workshops on Geographic Information Systems (GIS), ArcGIS and statistical analysis. These sessions provided valuable preparation for their independent investigations, giving students the confidence to begin planning their own NEA projects ahead of the new academic year.

The residential was not only academically enriching but also an opportunity for students to challenge themselves, work collaboratively and enjoy spending time together outside the classroom. Whether collecting data in the field, discussing geographical debates or simply appreciating the beautiful Devon coastline, students represented Chiswick School with enthusiasm, curiosity and maturity throughout the trip.

A huge thank you goes to the Chiswick PTA for their generous financial support, which helped make this valuable learning experience possible, and to the staff at the Field Studies Council for delivering such an engaging and rewarding programme.

The trip could not have been possible without Mr Bluer, Ms Tirbhowan and Ms Lamptey, for giving up their evenings and weekends to take the students to Devon. In my planning of the trip I also want to extend thanks to the reception, site and finance teams whose work in the background helps such trips take place. A real team effort.
