As part of their Diverse Worlds study of Africa during Spring 1, Year 8 geographers welcomed Astrid Madimba and Chinny Ukata, the creators of the award-winning podcast and book It's a Continent, to the school on Friday 17th April 2026.
It’s a Continent explores the complex, vibrant, and often untold stories of Africa’s 54 nations. From the ancient Kushite Empire and the fierce resistance of Queen Nzinga to the modern-day innovations shaping the globe, Astrid and Chinny challenged the “monolith” myth and encouraged students to see Africa as a diverse continent made up of many unique countries, cultures, and histories.
During the session, students learned about influential historical figures, including Mansa Musa, widely regarded as one of the wealthiest people to have ever lived. They also explored the achievements of powerful African queens and leaders, discussed misconceptions often associated with Africa, and considered how stereotypes and falsehoods can shape people’s understanding of the continent.
The workshop linked closely to students’ learning in Diverse Worlds and encouraged thoughtful discussion, critical thinking, and a deeper appreciation of Africa’s rich history, diversity, and global significance.
