The Young Artists’ Summer 2022

Congratulations to Florence Valentin in Year 13, whose thought-provoking watercolour entitled 'Isolated in the Artificial' was exhibited at the Royal Academy Young Artists' Summer Show 2022.

The Young Artists’ Summer Show champions the importance of art education in fostering the imagination and creativity of young artists, providing a platform for the showcase of their artwork. Florence’s entry was selected by a judging panel of passionate artists and arts professionals from a staggering 33,000 submissions!

To help the judges understand the thought process behind her entry, Florence wrote the following:

"My painting depicts a distortion of ornamental fish held captive in plastic bags displayed in shops. The unnatural light boldens the subjects, making them seem unreal. The crowded bags create a claustrophobic effect, mimicking the impact isolation has on society. I wanted to show how systems often neatly package people to fit commercialisation, in the same way animals are treated as accessories instead of vital parts of our ecosystem."

The Art Department is delighted for Florence and are eager to see how her final project develops this term. This is only the beginning; we would encourage other students to apply next year.
