School Allotment Update

Summer is fast approaching and our Year 7s, Year 8s and our Eco Committee have been busy weeding and mulching the plot and planting an array of fruit, vegetables and flowers. Not only have we grown tomatoes, beetroot, turnip, carrots and pumpkins from seed, we also have had so many sturdy seedlings donated from the CHAS community. Hopefully, in warmer weeks, we will see beans, strawberries, radishes and carrots start to bustle their way out and onto our plates.

We have been impressed by the groups’ construction skills. They took their own initiative to build paths and fences to make weeding and harvesting more efficient. They are now a dab hand at keeping the plot tidy and well-maintained by themselves.

On behalf of Chiswick School Allotment, Ms Whitaker had the opportunity to attend a biodiversity launch hosted by FORA and led by honey beekeeper and educator Mark Douglas from Bee 1. Bee 1 aims to promote awareness in schools and businesses about how vital bees are to our entire ecosystem. They therefore collaborate with schools, and connect with educational partners who create resources for educators to use. There were also fascinating talks from the CEO of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, Gill Perkins and a primary school headteacher who redesigned his curriculum around saving the bees.

Chiswick School also received a kit with goodies for the allotment including wild meadow seed, bee bombs and bee hotels. Additionally and excitingly, we will also receive remote, live access to our very own Chiswick School-adopted beehive, which will live on the rooftop of FORA near Liverpool St. It was brilliant to connect with other schools and educational organisations and hopefully in the coming year we can achieve the status of a ‘bee-friendly school’.
