Learning Support

Appropriate inclusion is at the heart of the school's thinking. The aim of the Inclusion Faculty is to increase the confidence, self-esteem and emotional well-being of all students and to help them access the curriculum to achieve and experience success.

The Inclusion FacultyLearning Support

The Inclusion Faculty is made up of the following:

  • Learning Support Department
  • Learning Support Unit (W4)
  • English as an Additional Language
  • Personalised Curriculum
  • The Centre

The Learning Support Department

All students have an equal right to fully access the curriculum offered by the school.

In a caring environment the Learning Support Department works with students with a wide variety of learning difficulties. The Department is made up of Special Needs Teachers, Higher Level Teaching Assistants and Teaching Assistants. We work together as a team and with outside agencies to provide support, advice and information to students, parents and teachers, to ensure that the student has the best possible experience of school and achieves their potential.

The Department provides for the Special Educational Needs of children through a variety of provision:

  • 1:1 working
  • Small group Literacy and Numeracy Extract classes
  • Social Skills groups
  • In-class support
  • Homework support
  • Providing advice to teaching staff

Learning Support Unit (W4)

An LSU is a classroom that offers academic, emotional and social support to students of all abilities. These students often have barriers to learning and are therefore not achieving their potential. Here at Chiswick our LSU, W4, offers students the opportunity to actively re-engage in learning and therefore experience success. It is intensive support in a small group setting with no more than 10 in a group. Any student at KS3 who needs part time, short term help across the curriculum will be considered. Students follow the same curriculum in W4 as taught in the mainstream classes.

English as an Additional Language

The EAL department aims to raise the achievement of students for whom English is an additional language. A variety of support is provided by small extract classes, in-class support and homework clubs.

The department also encourages students to maintain their home language and provides support so that they can gain GCSEs and A levels in their home language.
